Second Stimulus Awaits Senate Action |
In December, the House of Representatives passed its version of a second stimulus bill, the Jobs for Main Street Act, which currently awaits action by members of the Senate. As the negotiations over healthcare reform will likely take up a good portion of the Senate’s time in the coming weeks, its unclear what the second stimulus will look like coming from the Senate. Moreover, the Senate may likely wait to decide anything until the President offers a proposal for the stimulus, which will likely come in February with the submission of his budgets. This delay makes it more and more likely that the bill will combined with any forthcoming appropriations for the growth of force in Afghanistan, according with the common practice of minimizing the number of winter-spring appropriations bills. However, staffers have suggested that the focus of the Senate stimulus bill will be on small business, infrastructure, green energy, and the public sector, much like the House version. At the same, it is unclear whether the bill will match or fall under the $154 billion offered in the House.
