 Senate Adds $2 Billion in Transportation Security

The Senate Appropriations Committee passed a $ 121 Billion emergency supplemental spending bill last week which contains an additional $ 2 Billion for transportation security.

Compared to the House-passed bill, the Senate committee bill provides  $400 million more for rail and public transit security yet $400 Million less for airport baggage explosives detection systems at airports. Both bills currently provide an extra $ 190 Million more for port security, bringing the fy' 07 total up to $400 Million. 

The bill now goes to the Senate floor.

Can WRDA Differences Be Resolved This Year?

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee is set to markup its Water Resources Development Act reauthorization on Thursday. Under pressure from the House Transportation Committee, which turned early in the session to move the bill out, differences over how the Army Corps of Engineers reviews projects as well as the project list itself are great.

Last year, the two houses were unable to reach a compromise on the Act which is scheduled to be reauthorized every two years. (Last authorization, however, was in 2000). Billions of dollars in projects hang in suspension until this bill becomes law.
