Oberstar Lays Out Amtrak/Aviation Views |

House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Jim Oberstar yesterday said he would not take up the Amtrak reauthorization until the railroad provides "a total accounting of its needs" with the intention of "telling the public 'this is what it's going to take and this is where the money is going to go.'" Oberstar noted that funding Amtrak at $1.2 - $1.3 Billion is possible and that the Bush Administration's $900 Million proposal for '08 is a "shutdown cost." The Chairman said he was "not only skeptical but very quizzical" about the FAA proposal to replace the airline ticket tax with a new aviation user fee. He noted that the passenger knows exactly what their share of the aviation system's operation is and replacing the ticket tax would break the "relationship between the traveler, the government and the airline." | ||

House Committee to Move Three Water Bills Next Week |

|
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will move three water bills including one to provide $14 Billion over the next five years to pay for grants to states' revolving funds for wastewater treatment system construction. The long-awaited Water Resources Development Act full of billions of dollars of Army Corps of Engineers projects is slated to move through the committee in two weeks. The Act is slated to be updated every two years but Congress has not completed that job since 2000. | ||
