Administration and Congress Clash Again Over Funding

As the raucus Roger Clemens hearing took place in the room next door yesterday, House Transportation and Infrastructure Democrats strongly argued with US DOT Secretary Peters that the gas tax was a piece of a long-term viable funding equation and should not be eliminated with the replacement of "narrow, myopic, and fragmented approach" like DOT's congestion pricing, user fees, tolls, etc. Peters said that any increase in gas tax would hurt lower-income people while Highways and Transit Subcommittee Chair DeFazio countered that the Adminstration's recommendations in the alternative hit poorer drivers even harder. " People are not out there just cruising around during the most congested times of the day for fun," noted Mr. DeFazio.

All agreed with Cong. John Mica that together they may be able to construct public-private partnership agreement parameters that bring more private dollars to projects.
