In a
highly-unusual move, House Transportation Committee leaders last
week sent a letter to all 50 Governors, state transportation chiefs
and legislators warning that a rush into public-private partnerships
could have unintended complications and not result in an integrated
transportation system. They urged the cessation of negotiations
until Congress writes protective language in the next surface
transportation bill.
Chairmen
Oberstar and DeFazio critized the Administration's strong
endorsement of the agreements, noting some PPPs are "shortsighted" ,
"unbalanced" and will "mortgage" our transportation system for
decades. The letter went so far as to commit to actively working to
de-authorize any public-private partnership they find is not in the
public's interest.
Three hearings
have been held in May alone by the DeFazio HIghways and Transit
Subcommittee and another one is set for this week. The letter urged
holding off on any commitments until the Committee has
plenty of time to conclude its research and make recommendations in
the next bill. |
